As well as being an historic city itself, London is brimming with collections of art and artifacts – and entry to many museums and galleries is free.  Check individual websites for details of exhibitions, talks, tours and special events.

The British Museum has a vast collection spanning two million years of human history.  There are 94 galleries of archaeological finds, prints, coins, antiquities and of course mummies!  It is situated north of Covent Garden, on Great Russell Street.

The Natural History Museum in South Kensington has over 70 million specimens of life on earth housed in the magnificent Waterhouse Building.  Best known for its collection of dinosaur fossils and animatronics the museum promotes  the discovery, understanding, enjoyment, and conservation of the natural world and our place within it using interactive methods and displays.

How much of today’s technology and advancements do we take for granted?  A visit to South Kensington’s Science Museum will provide many of your own ‘eureka!’ moments as you discover the who, what and why of the modern world and the scientists that turned the idea into reality. 

The third of the South Kensington museums, the Victoria & Albert Museum is devoted to arts, crafts and culture.  Its diverse collection includes furniture, ceramics, metalwork, sculpture, glass work and textiles dating back 3000 years.

Imperial War Museum looks at the experience of war rather than its prosecution. This museum includes permanent and thought provoking exhibitions such as The Holocaust

Based in the heart of the City, the Museum Of London documents the rise of the capital city, from pre-history to modern day by way of archaeological artefacts, models, contemporary documents and interactive displays.
