Eating out
London is a gastronome’s dream, and with influences and inspiration drawn from all corners of the world there’s something to suit all tastes and budgets. There are numerous websites dedicated to London eating – www.squaremeal.com, www.toptable.co.uk to name just two. Most sites contain customer reviews and comments making it easier for you to choose where you’d like to eat.
Eating In
London has an enormous number of delicatessens and street markets, stocking a wide range of home grown and international foods. It’s not unusual to find products from such far flung places as Turkey, India, Thailand, Poland and the Middle East stocked side by side in your local grocery store.
Farmers’ markets sell owner produced meat, breads, cheeses, fruit and vegetables. Borough Market at London Bridge is one of the largest and best known and with neighbouring shops, pubs and tourist attractions makes an interesting day out. Find details of your nearest farmers’ market at www.lfm.org.uk.
Theatre
A visit to the theatre is a favourite past-time of Londoners and tourists alike. Covering everything from mainstream musicals to fringe productions, it’s no surprise that British acting royalty and Hollywood A-listers clamour to tread its hallowed boards.
As well as Theatreland (situated in the heart of the West End and so called due to the large concentration of theatres in the area), theatres staging quality productions are dotted all over London and include the National on the Southbank, the Almeida in Islington, the Old Vic and Young Vic at Waterloo and the Barbican at Barbican. Fans of the Bard will find him at home at Shakespeare’s Globe on Bankside.
Opera buffs will find varied programmes at the Royal Opera House and English National Opera.
Music
Music venues are as prolific and diverse as musical tastes. Live music pulses through the veins of the city, be it busking in underground stations or concerts in open parks and mega stadiums, there’s something for everyone.
Good one stop shops are Time Out magazine which summarises best of what’s on in London and where and www.myvillage.com - a complete guide to what’s in and what’s on in your area.
