Taking a leadership role on corporate responsibility is essential if the firm is to become the world's most trusted and respected financial services institution, Jamie Dimon, Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, wrote in his introductory letter.

Last year, the firm invested $114 million in more than 2,400 nonprofit organizations in nearly 500 cities across 33 countries. But the challenge goes well beyond philanthropy, noted firm's Corporate Responsibility head Bill Daley.

"We conduct and review our businesses with the goal of responsible behavior," Daley wrote in the report. "And we are prepared to make decisions to proactively address issues that affect us all, such as climate change, poverty and the current housing market crisis."
