Community

Being a first-class firm also means doing 'good', in addition to doing well. At JPMorgan we have a proud tradition of being a good corporate citizen around the world. We dedicate significant financial and human capital to supporting issues and causes important to our business and to our people.

At JPMorgan, we believe that we should play an active role in community development.  With so many communities within Europe, Middle East and Africa in need, we partner with organisations that work within these communities to identify innovative projects that help to leave a lasting and sustainable legacy.

Donations supporting Community Development

This year JPMorgan has agreed a $152,000 gift to the Scottish Community Foundation.  Not only will this give much needed support to projects identified by the Foundation in Glasgow and Edinburgh but will also involve a team of JPMorgan employees from offices located in both cities in the decision making process. Our employees will decide where the funding is directed, within the agreed areas of focus for the firm, and if there are ways that they can actively engage their colleagues in the projects.

In Frankfurt, feedback from employees involved in the JPMorgan Frankfurt Mentoring programme earlier this year identified that many of the pupils the employees had been mentoring have been almost unfit for school.  Wanting to make a difference, JPMorgan employees identified a community  located in Gallus Viertel with a population made up of immigrants from over 30 nations, high unemployment rate and families with poor social background.  In discussion with the Deutscher Kinderschutzbund, Germany’s largest organisation focusing on the protection of children, JPMorgan agreed to support the community by providing $113,000 for a Parent-Child Centre.  The centre will serve as a meeting point  for families and provide support in education, health and other topics, give guidance on developmental and educational opportunities available for their children.

As we strive to advance our philanthropy programme, we are currently developing a financial literacy strategy. As a socially responsible financial organisation, the community can immediately see the connection and unique contribution that JPMorgan can make in this area. As part of this process, a first grant of $252,000 to the Enterprise Education Trust was agreed to deliver a new pilot ‘one-day Financial Capability Programme’ to teenagers, supported by JPMorgan employees. The programme will have new resources and support materials including interactive modules, video and a funky ‘Little Book of Personal Finance’.

JPMorgan EMEA Volunteering Programme

JPMorgan has the ability to make  a real difference to the communities in which we work. Whilst financial support is important, we feel that the way to contribute effectively to a community is to be actively involved as well as providing financial assistance. Every year JPMorgan employees throughout the EMEA region volunteer to work on projects based in their local community.  Last year over 4,000 JPMorgan employees, together with their families and friends, volunteered for more than 230 projects. Volunteers worked on projects ranging from painting a classroom in their local school to designing and creating gardens for orphaned children in Romania and were supported by the firm donating money for the raw materials to facilitate these projects.

JPMorgan Team Engagement Programme

The JPMorgan Team Engagement Programme is an initiative aimed at supporting employees who wish to raise money to donate to charities of their choice.  A volunteer team creates and runs an internal event and the firm matches any monies raised to a total of up to $50,000. In 2006 a World Cup themed event, organised by Equity Research, raised $44,000 and their charity, Opportunity International, received $88,000 after the funds were matched through the Team Engagement Programme.  Four events are currently in production for this year and the volunteer teams are working to raise money for clouddog, a conservation charity which takes groups of disadvantaged young people on wilderness experiences in South Africa; ASHA supported by JPMorgan employees in Luxembourg this charity takes care of orphaned children in India and a couple of charities supporting disadvantaged children in London.
The firm also supports employee charitable donations through:

JPMorgan Payroll Giving Scheme

Our employees are able to donate money, to charities of their choice, through monthly donations paid via the firm's payroll which are automatically tax effective.

JPMorgan Matched Giving Scheme

Each year JPMorgan matches donations that our employees give to charities of their choice. In 2005, over $1million of employee donations were matched.
