Sales, Trading & Research
Instant responsibility. Instant results. Instant recognition.
High energy. High drama. The thrill of the deal. Big decisions. Immediate rewards. A career in Sales, Trading & Research isn’t for the faint-hearted. But for those who can combine courage with perfect judgement, there’s nothing quite like it.
Sales, Trading & Research. That’s the collective name we give to our Equities, Credit, Rates, Foreign Exchange, Commodities, and Emerging Markets businesses.
You can join us in any one of five roles. Become a trader and execute and price transactions worth $billions. Join us in sales and you’re the vital link between clients, traders and our research teams. As a marketer you’ll play a crucial role, filling the gap between those who create our products and those who sell them. Join structuring and your expertise in financial engineering will prove invaluable. Become a research analyst and you’ll provide priceless market insights and recommend market strategies that are as innovative as they are profitable.
Each role may have a different emphasis, but whatever you do it is guaranteed to be exciting. Wherever your specific skills lie, you’ll thrive in one of the most fast-moving and exciting working environments anywhere in this industry – or, for that matter, anywhere else.
Global finance is just that – global, and banks that can provide their clients with more access to better financial products and faster services than their rivals will end up as winners. In this environment, size, scale and staying power all matter. They’re qualities we have in abundance as evidenced by the leading positions we hold in so many global markets. Thanks to our award-winning products and cutting-edge trading systems, all of our people have the support they need to do their jobs; and thanks to our hierarchy- and bureaucracy-free promotion structure, the speed of your progression will be largely up to you. Indeed, many people become one-person profit centres, whilst others have attained the MD title by the age of 28.
As mentioned before Sales, Trading & Research is split into six interrelated product groups: Equities, Credit, Rates, Foreign Exchange, Commodities, and Emerging Markets.
Equities
Equities are essentially shares or certificates that represent a part ownership of an organisation. Equity markets provide companies with a chance to raise capital. We provide detailed analysis and insight on companies within the marketplace and, in doing so, create attractive investment opportunities for our clients. The Cash Equities group consists of sales and trading of European, US, Latin American and Asian equities serving a global investor base. The Equity Derivatives group structures investment solutions and also sells and trades equity derivatives depending on the clients needs.
Credit
Broadly speaking, the Credit group focuses on debt for corporations and their derivatives by delivering relevant solutions and world-class execution capabilities. JPMorgan combines market leading bond and credit derivatives trading, superior debt origination and structuring expertise to deliver exceptional solutions to our clients. In 2006, JPMorgan retained its title as the “Best Bank in Credit” in the Credit Magazine Awards.
Rates & Foreign Exchange
In order to fully align ourselves with our clients' needs, JPM has recently merged our Foreign Exchange (FX) & Rates businesses. From a simple FX spot trade to the most complex structured interest rate note, clients can express their views seamlessly across a full product suite; FX, options, non-deliverable forwards, bonds and interest rate swaps right through to bespoke structured solutions. The common denominator? Foreign exchange and the future expected levels of interest rates - the main tools used by governments or central banks to manage economies. We, together with our clients, therefore aim to make money by predicting price movements caused by macro-economic factors such as growth, inflation and government budget policies, as well as exploiting any pricing inefficiencies or event risk in the market. In fact, each day we trade about 10% of the $1.3 trillion FX volume in London - a phenomenal market share. The most recent data also shows that we have just under 20% of all interest rate derivatives transactions outstanding in the market. And this year, JPM was voted "Best Derivatives House in the past 20 years" by Risk Magazine.
Commodities
The Commodities group is responsible for the trading and sale of commodity products such as Precious Metals, Base Metals and Energy – indeed, in 2006, JPMorgan was named Risk Magazine’s “Energy Derivatives House of the Year”.
Emerging Markets
The Emerging Markets group delivers the full range of credit, rates and foreign exchange products related to emerging countries across Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia. Products include external debt, local currency debt, FX, interest rate swaps, derivatives, credit default swaps, corporate securities and structured products. JPMorgan has been able to capitalise on the year-on-year growth of this area by effectively co-ordinating our products across the world to meet our client’s needs.
